You’ve probably heard the buzzword “cloud” a lot in the last year, how your data can be stored safely and how you can even run your web applications from the “cloud”. When your enterprise decides to run their software in the “cloud” how do you secure access? Recently I have been lucky enough to experience one of Novell’s newest products, Novell Cloud Security Services or, more simply, NCSS. This product has a lot of interesting and exciting things I’d like to share with you.
Firstly, NCSS is a tool that gives you SSO for your SaaS applications. Many of you have probably implemented some kind of single-sign-on or “SSO” for your local applications. However, when you’re offering your software as a service, “SaaS,” how do you manage your end-users access? As some of you may know, SSO offers a few great benefits when implemented for your applications; it will reduce your user having the same password everywhere causing a glaring security concern as that user can be used as a single point of failure for your entire enterprise. It also reduces your users having different passwords for all of their services, which will cause an increased amount of help-desk calls as users forget what password they used where.
Alone these are mighty benefits that you will see the results from almost immediately after implementation, but NCSS has many other things that make it an exciting piece of software. NCSS will also keep comprehensive and complete audit logs of all user activity at a site-by-site basis. It uses Attachmate’s WorkloadIQ system to deliver value added compliance reports. This will allow you to keep compliance with many regulatory bodies.
Finally, Novell’s NCSS delivers all of these services with an easily accessible Management Console Dashboard, that allows you to manage all of the data and access that this application provides. Using the Management Console Dashboard you can create and set up users, configure their identity store, map role information to each application, and provide you usage and monitoring reports for each user.
I think you will agree that this application has far reaching and considerable ramifications in securing your enterprise in the “cloud” and will be extremely important given the current trends and technology in use today.
