ForgeRock's OpenIDM Open Source Identity Management

On May 31, 2011 ForgeRock released OpenIDM 2.0 Milestone 1.  This relative newcomer to Identity Management is being developed in the open source space, and offers a highly flexible, developer friendly, solution to business process handling and compliance. Currently the Roadmap for OpenIDM lays out their plans to have quarterly releases through quarter four of 2012. Since this is an open source product you can pull down the source code using these instructions; join the development community; discuss development; or file a bug report.

I recently had to set up an OpenIDM for an internal project.  I found the installation to be incredibly easy and intuitive. Very little effort and research went into getting the system to the point that I could de/provision a user with their REST interface. When a user is provisioned it is stored in an OrientDB database, so it was relatively simple using a few NoSQL statements to ensure my REST calls had performed the task they were intended to. Since I didn’t want to manually provision each test user I decided to set up a CSV connector to try and bulk import into the system. While their system took a bit or research and poking around  to get working, ultimately their use of JSON for reconciliation, synchronization, and mapping made the process more or less easy to set up.

While I’m still becoming acclimated with the product, it does seem to be on the right track to fit a niche market within the Identity Management field- especially with its goal of replacing the decommissioned Sun IDM. The only improvement I would like to see with the product is a better, more proper community. When you come across an issue there is a small amount of documentation, and the mailing list still seems to be somewhat barren. Though, that being said, these things will mature with time, and will cease to be an issue.

Thanks for giving OpenIDM 2.0 a try! And thanks for the constructive feedback. We've recently started spending quite a bit of effort to pull together the information that was spread throughout the wiki and a couple of guides into an integrators guides, which seems to be taking shape quite nicely:

We'd welcome any feedback and contributions, as you rightly point out the whole community benefits as more and more users put it through its paces and share their wins as well as challenges. If you have any additional questions or issues I think you will find that we're a very responsive bunch with big plans, and I hope to see your continued input.

Also look out for some interesting new developments in the very near future :)
