When deciding to create a product or application – whether a website, desktop application, or anything calling something for data – you should consider using a web service.
The benefits of this are scalability and ease of updates. Consider this, if you deploy an application that is on either a customer’s server, desktop computer, or a mobile application what happens when you need to make an update to the way the data is transferred or returned from a data call?
If your queries are contained in the application then every single one of those applications will need to be updated. However, using a web services to call you can control any updates to the queries and globally update every single application that calls your service.
If your program has a hard coded query in it for data and you deploy to multiple customers it could be months before you realize your program has a bad query in it. If you were using a web service you could update your service which would then update every application that uses it without having to redeploy your product to the customer.
You can continue to advance and speed up your database without having to compile and redeploy code. For ease-ability and maintainability a web service is a developer’s best friend for the programming mentality of DRY - Don’t Repeat Yourself.
