Becoming Compliant with the CJIS Security Policy
Compliance , Advanced Authentication , CJIS , HID Global , Security Add commentsThe Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) database provides state, local, and federal law enforcement and criminal justice agencies with access to critical, personal information such as fingerprint records, criminal histories, and sex offender registrations. In order to prevent unauthorized access to this extremely sensitive information, a security policy governing the access to the CJIS database was enacted on January 1, 2011. The CJIS mandate sets forth the minimum requirements for securing access to the data included within CJIS. The policy requires “Advanced Authentication,” or multi-factor authentication, to be implemented across all those agencies that access the information contained in the CJIS database. Public safety, judicial, and correctional institutions must comply or face administrative sanctions and/or criminal penalties as set forth by the FBI.
Action Identity has found that many cases, those accessing the CJIS database already carry some sort of card. Whether it’s a building access card, or an ID card, our partners at HID Global can use these existing cards and outfit them with inexpensive technology that will meet the multi-factor authentication requirements of the CJIS mandate making your organization CJIS compliant. To reach compliance using this solution, you simply place your card on the reader, and enter something you know, like a password or pin. This is multi-factor or advanced authentication.
Recently our friends over at CJISMandate.com released a collection of videos that explain Advanced Authentication, and demonstrates the benefits and highlights of HID’s NaviGO software, which meets the requirements set forth by the CJIS security policy. These videos walk viewers through the steps of setting up users in NaviGO and explaining why using building access cards is a cost effective solution for those needing to meet CJIS compliance. These videos are available for viewing on our new YouTube channel, ActionIdentity, and by clicking the links below.
The videos are broken down into 3 variations:
