Optimizing Drivers That Involve Multiple Information Resources

I was given a driver for a client that involved accessing multiple facilities, and seeing if those facilities went to the same database. If they did go to the same database, I had to add them all at the same time to the database, and then be sure not to overwrite users in the same file if another facility with the same database came in. To accomplish this, I would take every value in my access list, and populate a list of everything I needed off of that facility.

Trying to determine the best layout for an application driver can sometimes be tricky, and occasionally the standard model just doesn’t fit the requirements you need to meet. So when I recently got documentation for an application that a client needed a connector for, I was a taken aback by the requirements this application seemed to layout. I was looking down at a business analysis done on ~45 database tables with not a stored procedure in sight. So of course I began laying out the SQL calls I would need to make to do some standard operations such as, creating a user, modifying that user, disabling, re-enabling, renaming etc.

Messaging Protocols: SOAP vs. REST - Which one's Better?

Recently, we had to determine the best way to communicate to a web service that was being developed. The use cases for this web service required it to be platform and language agnostic, it also had to allow stateful operations. To handle this, we narrowed it down to two messaging protocols: SOAP and REST. In this blog post I will break down the advantages and disadvantages of both and explain which one we ended up using.
